Animal Skin & Allergy Clinic - Laser Surgery

Lasers are devices that use light which has been enhanced to emit a beam which will remove tissue in a very small, precise pattern. In dermatology the CO2 laser is used most often. This laser removes tissue with less bleeding, less pain and swelling, and because it can be focused precisely, it will only remove the desired tissue without damage to the surrounding structures.

Dr. Duclos was one of the first veterinary dermatologists to use the laser in veterinary dermatology. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on the use of the CO2 laser in veterinary dermatology. He is also the author of papers, and chapters in veterinary literature on the use of the CO2 laser in veterinary dermatologic diseases.

At the Animal Skin and Allergy Clinic we use the most advanced model of CO2 laser available today, the Aesculight laser. This laser is made in Woodinville, WA by the engineers who designed and built the original veterinary CO2 laser. www.aesculight.com

The following are some pictures of some cases in which the laser is used to treat skin conditions.

Note: these are just a few examples (Warts, Bowen's Disease, Viral Pigmented Plaques, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Ear Tumors, Histiocytoma, and Birth Marks - see photos below)

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

All of these tumors can be removed by laser surgery; this prevents the spread of the cancer to other sites. Laser surgery if done before the tumors spread is curative.

Ear Tumors:

Ear tumors are difficult to remove with the scalpel, because it is impossible to prevent damage to the normal surrounding ear. When these tumors are removed with laser ablation, little to no bleeding occurs, and there is no damage to the normal ear tissue. The ears heal with no pain and there is very little damage to the normal ear.

After surgery

After healing - 3 to 4 weeks

Histiocytomas:

These tumors also are easily removed with the laser, there is no blood, no pain, no damage to normal tissue, most do not need sutures. Many of these can be removed on the animal without complete anesthesia, just a local lidocaine block of the tumor area.

Sebaceous Gland Tumors (sometimes called “senile warts”)

In this dog there were more than normal numbers of sebaceous gland tumors. They were removed with laser ablation, no sutures needed, and in 4 weeks the dog's skin is healed. Dogs that get these tumors will develop new ones since this is a genetic trait seen in older dogs. Usually once per year we remove new growths; 10 to 20 per year on average.

Nevi – Birthmarks like the one below, are easily removed using laser ablation. No blood, no sutures, and healing results in normal skin
